Karen Briggs, Director of Finance for Lake County Schools, has been appointed the district’s Chief Financial Officer, effective Aug. 1. The School Board approved the appointment at its meeting Monday night.
Ms. Briggs will replace Carol MacLeod, who has been the district’s CFO since 2007. She is retiring on Monday, July 31.
Ms. Briggs has 30 years of accounting experience in both public and private arenas. As Director of Finance, a position she has held since 2014, Ms. Briggs is responsible for supervising accounting, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, centralized student accounting, preparation of financial statements, analysis and reporting, and treasury functions. She also oversees the coordination of all financial and state compliance audits and the establishment of accounting policies, procedures and processes.
In her new role, Ms. Briggs will be responsible for planning and implementing the goals and objectives of the Finance department. She will coordinate business functions with instructional activities and administer and coordinate the preparation of the annual budget and long-range strategic planning process, including the capital improvement plan. She will also oversee purchasing, risk management and the process for wage and salary development.
Early in her career, Ms. Briggs worked as a senior auditor for a firm in Fort Lauderdale and later as an accountant and senior financial analysts for a corporation in Deerfield Beach. She eventually went on to work as an internal auditor and then supervisor of accounting and internal accounts for Citrus County Schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Florida Atlantic University and an MBA from Nova Southeastern University.
