On May 25th, Triangle Elementary will host the 2019 Capoeira Angola Palmares Batizado. Capoeira is a Brazilian Martial Art that was created by slaves in the early 16th century. The Batizado is the graduation of a student of capoeira and his/her introduction to the capoeira ranks. In partnership with Capoeira Angola Palmares, Triangle Elementary will graduate approximately 30 students from their after school capoeira program. The event will be attended by members of Capoeira Academies from all over the United States.
The Batizado will feature two renowned Mestres or “Masters” of Capoeira: Paulo Aires (Mestre Gulliver) and George Carneiro (Mestre George Palmares). Both of these Mestres will give workshops to the Triangle students and visiting students from other capoeira academies in Florida. Mestre George stated, “Capoeira is an outstanding way to for youth learn the values of focus, discipline and respect and apply them to everyday life. We are honored to be a part of this opportunity for the students of Lake County.”
In addition to the workshops, a special workshop for students with disabilities will be given by Mr. Marcio Gomes (Contra-Mestre Mr. M). Contra-Mestre Mr. M is a founder of “Capoeira para Crescer” or “Capoeira to Grow”, a group dedicated to empowering people with disabilities through capoeira. He will be giving a special workshop he special needs students of Triangle Elementary and other visiting capoeira academies.
