The Florida League of Cities, the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments, recently recognized Mount Dora City Councilmember Doug Bryant with a 2024 Home Rule Hero Award for advocacy efforts during the 2024 Legislative Session.Home Rule is the ability for a city to address local problems with local solutions with minimal state interference. “Local decisions by local elected officials just makes good sense. Locally elected city councils are the closest form of government to the residents we serve. Cities and towns must protect the right of ‘home rule’ whenever possible,” said Bryant, who serves as an at-large member of the Mount Dora City Council. He has served on the Planning and Zoning Commission, City Charter Review Commission and Lake County Water Authority board. 

Lake-Sumter State College will add men’s and women’s golf teams for the 2024-25 season, becoming the seventh sport sponsored by the college. The teams will be located on the South Lake Campus in Clermont and use local courses for practice and competition. Both teams will play in the fall and spring, with championship tournaments during the spring season. LSSC is the sixth Florida College System institution in NJCAA Region 8 to offer golf. More than 100 people showed up, with 21 planes arriving from various parts of Florida, for the March 30 Experimental Aircraft Association Fly-In/Drive-In event at the Leesburg International Airport, which included a blueberry pancake breakfast and opportunity to tour the EAA Chapter 534 hangar and meet pilots and EAA members. 

Publix Super Markets Charities recently awarded Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter a $150,000 grant, as signature sponsor of a new home being constructed in Tavares. The home will be built in The Cottages at Heritage Grove, a planned unit development consisting of 23 affordable housing units and green space. The neighborhood will be designed with 680- to 730-square-foot apartment-sized homes with front porches overlooking the community green space. 

Beacon College’s Juan and Lisa Jones Center for Career Preparation hosted the inaugural ICAN 2024 (Internship Careers And Neurodiversity) on April 5 at the Venetian Center in Leesburg. The internship and early career event was designed for college students who learn differently and employers eager to develop a neurodiverse talent workforce.Beacon College is dedicated to educating primarily students with learning disabilities, ADHD, dyslexia and other learning differences.

The SECO Energy board of trustees elected its 2024 officers during their March trustee meeting. District 3 trustee Gerald Anderson was re-elected board president. Scott Boyatt, District 1 trustee, was elected to once again serve as board vice president and District 9 trustee Morgan Hatfield was re-elected to continue her role as secretary/treasurer. SECO Energy is a not-for-profit electric cooperative owned by its members, who elect board representatives for three-year terms.

Local author Heather McFall will be at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books at the University of Southern California April 20–21 to sign copies of her new book, “A Dedicated Life, An Empath’s Journey.” McFall, who was a longtime contributor to Well Being magazine, is a certified hypnotist.
