In 2008, the State of Florida had 4,957 new identified cases of AIDS (Rate 26.23) and 7,588 newly identified cases of HIV (Rate 40.16). These numbers represent a 6% (AIDS) and 7% (HIV) increase in rates when compared to 2007. Lake County rates for newly identified case of AIDS and HIV decreased by a little over 4.5% from 2007 to 2008. Although statistically, it appears that locally, we are trending in the right direction, it is important to know that every 9 1⁄2 minutes, another person in the United States becomes infected with HIV.
