Sonnentag Theatre at the IceHouse
Friday, January 6, 2012
The Sonnentag Theatre at the IceHouse continues its 64th season with the delightful comedy, Lend Me A Tenor by the master of American farce, Ken Ludwig. The comedy will play Thursdays - Sundays, January 20 - February 12, for sixteen performances. Performances are Thursdays at 7:30 pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm, and Sundays at 2:00 pm; with an extra matinee scheduled for Saturday, February 11 at 2:00 pm. The beautifully-renovated IceHouse is located at 1100 N. Unser St., Mount Dora, FL 32757.
American Sign Language (ASL) interpreted performance: Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals are invited to attend an ASL-signed performance of Lend Me A Tenor on Saturday, February 4 at 8:00 pm. Two professional ASL interpreters with specialized training necessary for signing live theatre will perform. Select seating is available for those who wish to be closest to the ASL interpreters. Interested patrons must request these designated seats by phone with the Box Office. Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals, as well as one companion, are eligible to purchase reduced price tickets for this performance.
The hilarious farce, Lend Me A Tenor, set in 1934, revolves around the much-anticipated performance of world-famous Italian tenor, Tito Merelli, playing the role of Otello, at the Cleveland Grand Opera's tenth anniversary gala. Merelli accidentally downs too many tranquilizers and passes out cold. To rescue the fundraising event from disaster, the Opera manager's shy assistant, Max, is coaxed into costume to fill in for the seemingly-deceased star. All goes well until Merelli revives in time for the second act, and the mistaken identities commence in the best tradition of classic farce. The comic twists and turns are fast-paced and neatly-timed in a style that recalls the best of the Marx Brothers' witty, screwball comedies of the 1930's era.
The talented cast includes four well-known IceHouse players and four new faces; veteran performers are Robyn Sennott, Jennifer Bonner, Jackie Prutsman and Rick Breese and the newcomers joining them are actors with impressive resumes, Jacob Waldron, Kit Hoffman, Patrick Zaia and Ken Rush. The show is directed by Darlin Barry, the Theatre's managing artistic director, with set design by Paul Bedford, lighting design by Amy Hadley and costumes by Robyn Sennott and Kathy Campbell.
The newly re-christened Sonnentag Theatre at the IceHouse has received unanimous praise from patrons on the stunning renovation of the facility, which this season offers new amenities aimed towards the comfort and convenience of patrons, including a beautiful concession lounge serving wine and beer before and during the shows.
