Hickory Point Celebrates 20th Anniversary

In 1992 the 68-acre Hickory Point Park, owned and operated by the Lake County Water Authority opened its doors to provide recreational amenities to the public. During its 20-year lifespan the park has served over 500,000 residents and visitors. Staff has scheduled some outdoor activities as part of the 20th Anniversary celebration to encourage folks to enjoy the outdoors and to explore Hickory Point Park. The park located south of Tavares on SR 19 has free daily admission between 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and the LCWA Board has additionally waived the fees for all of February 24 hours/day & 7 days/week.

. Introduction to Kayaking Certification - Wednesday, February 15th 10 am, 1 pm & Saturday, February 18th 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm. The Water Authority is partnering with Florida From a Kayak to offer a basic kayaking skills and water safety course. Participants will be taught basic paddle skills, paddle strokes and water safety. Participants are limited to 10 each class and will utilize the newly acquired skills out on Little Lake Harris. $20/person all equipment is provided. Participants will also have an opportunity to try out paddle boards.
. Ibini tera lakes clean-up - Saturday, March 10th 9:00 a.m. The Water Authority will be hosting a county-wide clean-up of our lakes. Paddlers are needed. Participants will receive a t-shirt and free lunch at Hickory Point Park following the event. Call our office if you are interested in joining us, many launch sites around the county are planned.
. Introduction to Birdwatching - Saturday, March 31st, 8:00 a.m., free to participate. The Water Authority will be partnering with the Lake County Parks & Trails Dept. to offer this introductory course to the exciting world of birdwatching. Lake County's very own masterbirder, Gallus Quigley will be leading this course and taking participants into Hickory Point to practice their skills.
. Introduction to Geocaching - Saturday, April 28th, 9:00 a.m., free to participate. Using Global Positioning System or GPS (e.g., Garmin) is part of the latest craze in scavenger hunts using technology. Participants will have a short course on the "whys and hows" of GPS, their use in the real world and then participate in a fun, interactive scavenger hunt at Hickory Point. Great for families and friends.
