"Off-pump" Bypass Surgery Associated with Reduced Occurrence of Stroke and Other Complications

Friday, January 27, 2012

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is when one or more of the main blood vessels feeding the heart is blocked, and it can lead to coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG). Improving outcomes after surgery and advances in technology have led surgeons to perform coronary artery bypass surgery without cardiopulmonary bypass, called off-pump bypass (also called "beating heart") surgery.

Off-Pump bypass surgery has shown significant benefits and better patient outcomes. These benefits include shorter post-operative hospital stay, less blood loss, less likely to have transfusion, decreased systemic inflammatory response, and fewer arrhythmia and neurologic postoperative complications. In addition, Off-Pump bypass surgery significantly decreases the risk of stroke.

To learn more about off-pump bypass surgery, register to attend "Is Everyone a Candidate For Off-Pump Bypass Surgery?" presented by Gary Allen, MD, FACS. Held at Florida Hospital Waterman Team Rooms 1 & II (3rd Floor Medical Office Building) on Thursday, Feb 9 at 4:00 pm. RSVP is required, call 352.253.3388 or email cara.anderson@ahss.org to register.
