Lake County's 2nd Annual STEM Competition

Friday, January 13, 2012

Organizers of Lake County Schools' Second Annual STEM Bowl are promising a rocking good time for the three-day competition scheduled for Jan. 25-27 at the Golden Triangle YMCA, located at 1465 David Walker Drive, Tavares.

The theme for this year's competition, which tests students' knowledge of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), is "STEM Rocks, We Will We Will Rock You." Elementary schools have formed their teams of five students to compete in the event that fosters problem solving and higher-order thinking.

New to this year's STEM Bowl is the addition of a third grade competition. On Jan. 25, third graders will compete and on the next day fourth grade teams will enter the STEM Bowl. Fifth graders will close the three days of competition on Jan. 27. Each competition will be held from 9 to 11 a.m.

"We have 22 elementary schools participating in three days of competition," said Stephanie Luke, one of the event organizers. "With 22 schools competing, 330 students from across Lake County will be competing in this year's STEM Bowl. I expect many parents and community members will be there each day to cheer for their favorite school."

The success of last year's STEM Bowl was in part due to the partnership from local business sponsors. This year's preliminary lineup of sponsors is equally impressive. Signed up to participate in the event are Data Graphics, Florida Hospital Waterman, Golden Triangle YMCA, Rotary Club of Eustis, SunTrust, Educators Outlet, Chick-fil-A, Publix, Sonic, Danny Len Buick GMC and ERA Tom Grizzard Realtors.

Businesses that are interested in sponsoring the Second Annual STEM Bowl are encouraged to contact Stephanie Luke at (352) 253-6555 or Rose Sedely at (352) 253-6593.
